Conference Notice: 4th International Symposium on Geotechnical Safety and Risk
发布时间:2013-03-03

Introduction

Safety, reliability and risk assessment and management have attracted growing interests of the geotechnical community in recent years due to frequent occurrences of natural and man-made disasters. At the same time there is an increasing expectation of the general public that requires the engineering community to provide quantitative information concerning risks related to geotechnical hazards such as earthquakes, landslide, geo-structure failures, etc. This symposium aims to bring together engineers, educators, researchers and practitioners to create a better understanding and management of geotechnical safety, reliability and risk.

This symposium is a continuation of a series of symposiums and workshops on geotechnical risk and reliability starting with LSD2000 in Melbourne, Australia, IWS2002 in Tokyo and Kamakura, Japan, LSD2003 in Cambridge, USA, Georisk2004 in Bangalore, India and Taipei2006 in Taiwan. Realizing the importance of risk and safety in geotechnical engineering, it was decided to establish a series of symposiums: in 2007 the 1st International Symposium on Geotechnical Safety and Risk was held in Shanghai, China, followed by the 2nd ISGSR in Gifu, Japan in 2009, and the 3rd ISGSR in Munich, Germany in 2011. The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology takes great pleasure to host the 4th ISGSR in Hong Kong in 2013.

Hong Kong is an Asia’s world city, and it is located strategically in the world map. There are more than 70 airlines operating over 2,200 scheduled passenger flights per week to Hong Kong from over 130 destinations worldwide. Hong Kong is also a convenient gateway to Mainland China, Macau and southeast Asia.

Organizer

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) under the auspices of:

  • Geotechnical safety network (GEOSNet)
  • The International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE) - TC 304: Engineering Practice of Risk Assessment and Management; TC 205: Safety and Serviceability in Geotechnical Design

and supported by:

  • National Basic Research Program of China (2011CB013500)
  • Hong Kong Geotechnical Society (HKGES)
  • The Geotechnical Division of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE-GD)
  • The Geotechnical Engineering Office of CEDD of the HKSAR (GEO)
  • Chinese Institution of Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering
  • Engineering Risk and Insurance Branch of China Civil Engineering Society (CCES-ERIB)
  • ASCE Hong Kong Section

Conference Themes

Every aspect of geotechnical safety, reliability and risk will be covered. This includes both theoretical developments and practical applications for a wide range of geotechnical related problems. Topics include but are not limited to:

(1) Geotechnical uncertainty and variability

(2) Geohazards, such as landslides, earthquakes, tsunami and climate changes

(3) Reliability and risk analysis

(4) Reliability-based design and limit state design in geotechnical engineering

(5) Risk assessment and management in geotechnical engineering and infrastructural projects

(6) Practical applications and case studies

 Call for papers

Call for Abstracts/Proposals

Abstracts/session proposals of 300 to 500 words are invited and to be submitted online. Late submissions of abstract are still welcome subjected to on-time submission of the full papers.

There is no specific format for the abstract but it should contain the paper title, names and affiliations of all authors, and a brief description of the work to be presented. The submitted abstracts/session proposals will be reviewed by the Scientific Committee to assess their relevance to the symposium, the originality of the work and the potential contributions they can make to engineering science or practice. Notification of acceptance will be sent by 22 November 2012.

The official language is English.
